Margot Bell, Supported Employment Job Coach

Margot Bell’s journey with disability advocacy and community started in sixth grade after meeting her best friend, role model, and North Star in P.E class, who happened to have an intellectual disability. After surviving middle school, joining their high school’s Special Olympics basketball team, and starting Seattle’s first high school Best Buddies chapter together, Margot went to college at Vanderbilt University to study special education, disability studies, and how to be the best advocate for inclusion she possibly could be. Margot has come back every summer to spend time with the beloved Seattle disability community and is thrilled to be back for the foreseeable future post-grad. She’s had the pleasure of working as a job coach for Vanderbilt’s inclusive higher education program, Next Steps, teaching at Our Beginning preschool, and working for the fabulous Seattle disability services nonprofit PROVAIL. Margot is incredibly passionate about identifying the best individualized supports and accommodations possible for folks to thrive in school, employment, social settings, and beyond! The world is a better place when everyone has what they need to succeed and live their lives the way they want. Access is love!

Kate Chen headshot

Kate Chen, Office Manager

Kate’s identity as an advocate in the disability community started early as the sibling of a younger brother with an intellectual disability. Originally from Chicago, Kate spent five years working as an elementary special education teacher working with students from diverse backgrounds. She loved working in the classroom and collaborating with colleagues in co-teaching partnerships to encourage inclusion. Kate then pursued her Masters Degree becoming certified as a Transition Specialist with a focus on behavior modification and employment. Upon finishing her degree, Kate and her husband Mike moved to Dublin, Ireland for both a work opportunity and life adventure. In Dublin, she worked as a direct support worker supporting young adults navigate public transportation, avail of community recreation, and attend junior college courses.

Upon returning to Seattle, Kate worked as an Employment Consultant supporting individuals with disabilities find and maintain jobs, while learning new skills and pursuing career growth. She enjoyed working closely with individuals, their families and employers to modify job tasks and the work environment to create opportunities for independence.

After taking a break from the field to start a family, Kate is super excited to join the PlayGarden team as an office administrator. She was lucky enough to join the community as a parent as both her kids attended PlayGarden as preschoolers and now gets to support the mission of the organization from behind the scenes. Her goal is to continue to support the impact PlayGarden has as an inclusive leader in our community both as an inclusive preschool, accessible play space and supported employer. When she’s not at PlayGarden, Kate loves going to new parks with her kiddos, working on her vegetable garden and running.

Ingrid Staff Picture PlayGarden, Preschool Teacher's Assistant

Ingrid Ibambasi, Preschool Teacher’s Assistant

After immersing herself into the study of capoeira at the Seattle Capoeira Center for two years, her Mestre (Master of Capoeira) began insisting  that she apply for an open assistant teaching position at his daughter’s preschool school, Seattle PlayGarden. He had been observing her diligence, patience, and wonderful ability to work effectively with children of all abilities as a capoeira teacher at an after school program at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School. She still holds her teaching position at the after school program, where she teaches once a week, but is most excited to be Seattle PlayGarden’s newest Assistant Teacher.

Hailing from Kigali, Rwanda, Ingrid was raised in Boise, ID and became an American citizen as a young child before her family relocated to Atlanta, GA. She is very proud of her roots and loves her countries. Active in the worlds of debate and journalism, Ingrid is always interested in learning more about legislature, world events, politics, civil rights, and inclusion. She moved to Seattle looking for her next adventure and she has found it! Seattle PlayGarden has become one of her favorite places in the city. She is elated to watch the kids’ growth and assist in the learning of every single one of our preschoolers. She believes our environmentally based curriculum gives children a freedom and confidence she has never before encountered in education.

In her free time, Ingrid loves to FaceTime her family, hike, study fashion, spend time with friends, camping, and generally enjoying all that the PNW has to offer.

preschool teaching assistant, Ali SmithAli Smith, Preschool Teacher’s Assistant
Ali was an early elementary teacher in culturally, linguistically and socio-economically diverse elementary schools for nine years before taking a break as she and her husband had a family. Ali loved being a teacher because of her deep respect for children, childhood, and learning. Everyone is born to learn and she loves to encourage children’s natural curiosities through play and active engagement in their surroundings.

Ali’s children attended co-op preschool, and as a co-op parent she and her husband volunteered as classroom assistants weekly. It was such a joy to be back in the classroom, surrounded by play and paint and play-dough. Now that her own children are in elementary school she is delighted to spend her days playing and learning alongside the children of the PlayGarden. When Ali is not in the classroom you will usually find her gardening, knitting, sewing, baking with my two children, and playing with her family and two cats.

Hi, I am Jen Anderson! I’ve been a Seattle-ite for over 20 years, hailing from California. I live on Beacon Hill with my husband, 18 year old daughter and dog, Moose. I work at T-Mobile in customer marketing and have been obsessed with the intersection of human behavior, data, and marketing since the internet came along 30 years ago. I’ve worked with companies like Microsoft, AT&T and CocaCola. My daughter Skye has been part of the PlayGarden community for over a decade –  first as a camper and now a counselor. The uniqueness of PlayGarden’s mission has inspired her to carve a future in disability education. I felt called to play at PlayGarden and am eager to share my skills, resources, time, and advocacy in partnership with you all. Extremely grateful to be part of the board.

Fun fact: I am an identical twin. She lives in Madrona and teaches at Leschi Elementary. Be warned, if you see me and I don’t reply with familiarity – it is my twin Katie!
